Democrats are NOT Socialists/Marxist!

First of all Marxist are very much for government control of every thing. Liberal or Conservative is only half of politics. The other half is just as important because it allows you to tell leftists like Stalin and Gandhi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahatma_Gandhi - who was much like Martin Luther King). This other half of politics is Libertarian or Authoritarian. You have probably heard of the Libertarian party, or at least Ron Paul. I could bother to explain their respective stances in detail, but this site does a better job than I ever could. http://www.politicalcompass.org/ Just to be clear, every body is a Liberal or a Conservative AND a Libertarian or an Authoritarian. I, for instance, am a Libertarian Liberal who votes for/ supports Democrats. To find out what you are take the test a political compass.


Democrats are often more Libertarian (ie: gay rights, most against wiretapping, civil rights in the past) Republicans tend to be more Authoritarian (ie, wiretapping).

Now, in order to be a socialist, one would have to be Exceedingly Liberal and Authoritarian. Socialists like Hugo Chavez want to control all aspects of the economy and the personal lives of the people. Ironically, the Republicans tend to be Authoritarian (though not nearing the level of socialism) and Democrats tend to be Liberal (FDR was not as Liberal as Socialists , Obama is about half as liberal as he would need to be.) Marxists are even worse than Socialists- more Authoritarian.

In short, Democrats are not Liberal enough to be socialist, AND many are almost the opposite of Socialists in that they believe in far to many Libertarian things to be socialists.

By adding the social dimension you can show that Stalin was an authoritarian leftist (ie the state is more important than the individual) and that Gandhi, believing in the supreme value of each individual, is a libertarian leftist. http://www.politicalcompass.org/analysis2.
